Lucifer: 10 Essential Episodes To Watch Before The Final Season Premieres

Thanks to Netflix swooping in and #SavingLucifer, Season 4 not only shattered fans’ expectations but the platform’s streaming numbers. Even now, it’s still going strong. So naturally, Netflix will let the Lucifer team finish the series on their terms, greenlighting the fifth and final season of the show.

With Lucifer’s self-enlightenment and return to Hell, Chloe’s love confession, and the return of Dan’s awfulness, there are still a lot of cards on the table. With 67 episodes clocking in around the 48min mark on average, a full rewatch might not be feasible. Slimming it down, here are 10 essential episodes to watch before the final season premieres.

Start Now advertising 10 “#TeamLucifer” (Season 1, Episode 12)

Remember Malcolm? That Williams fellow that Lucifer drove to insanity? Back when everything was more double murder-y and less emotional hurt? Good times.

The team definitely took some risks doing this episode, having it center around a Satanic cult. For the most part, the situation is undercut with the amount of goat-related humor and Lucifer being offended by the humans’ portrayal of him. But we learn some very important things about our central characters. For one, Chloe’s trust in Lucifer. And then there’s Lucifer, set in his “devilish” ways but toeing the line (mentally) between man and monster.

9 “Take Me Back to Hell” (Season 1, Episode 13)

This episode really marks the first time we see Lucifer and Amenadiel playing nice and working together. It’s nice to see someone from that side of Lucifer’s life actually helping him. Mazikeen also gets to show another side of herself, allowing for her character to grow and develop going into Season 2.

But most importantly, we see Hell for the first time. We see how God communicates with his children, how vague divinity can be, and that there’s actually a Goddess in the lore. We also now know Lucifer will most likely go to Hell if he does die. Ultimately, we see what Lucifer is willing to sacrifice for Chloe and just how much he’s trying to be a decent, if not good, person.

advertising 8 “The Weaponizer” (Season 2, Episode 5)

More angels! This time, we get the middle child Uriel and honestly? He’s not all that angelic. Focused on the greater good above all else, he’s willing to set in motion plans that would have not only killed the Goddess, but also Chloe and Mazikeen. And everything was planned of his own volition. God didn’t send Uriel.

This episode is a huge setback for any progress Lucifer’s made with Linda. Uriel was the first being Lucifer murdered. But not only did he kill Uriel, he completely erased Uriel out of any plane of existence. It sets a domino effect for the rest of the season, showing us how self-destructive Lucifer can be and how he’s never had a support system until now.

7 “A Good Day to Die” (Season 2, Episode 13)

Welcome back to Hell! This episode sees our main cast working together for a common goal: saving Chloe Decker. Once Dan and Lucifer figure out that only one person would have the antidote to Chloe’s poisoning, Lucifer comes to the conclusion that the only way to save her is to go to Hell.

It’s the first time we get to see the Hell loops and it turns out, Lucifer is no exception to soul-crushing guilt. We later find out that Hell is actually optional, that the door is unlocked but it’s up to the soul to break the cycle. But even with this knowledge, Lucifer couldn’t break his because, deep down, he believed he deserved it. It takes the Goddess going after him to get them both back to the land of the living. Even though it’s not a weekly broadcast, it definitely feels like a mid-season finale and generally, it’s a fantastic episode.

advertising 6 “The Sin Bin” (Season 3, Episode 10)

As the second part of the Sinnerman arc, we get some great character moments between the current love triangle. Mostly, that Lucifer is still super self-centered and is willing to go behind Chloe’s back to get answers for himself.

It marks a breach of trust between the two, which makes Chloe’s actions in Season 4 that much more relatable and believable. But it also reassures us that Lucifer still has some form of moral backbone and didn’t actually kill a human due to pettiness and Daddy Issues.

5 “A Devil of My Word” (Season 3, Episode 24)

Here it is, where it finally happens. Well, first we get the giant reveal that Pierce is indeed behind the entire Sinnerman syndicate and has been committing massive amounts of crime for years. Yikes! And Chloe was going to marry this guy!

Following the murder of Charlotte Richards, the team sets out to find her killer and bring him to justice. Of course, things don’t quite play out the way anyone would’ve hoped. Lucifer and Chloe are led to a trap and everything goes downhill from there. By the end of the episode, Lucifer’s Devil Face has returned in full force and guess who got an eyeful of that?

advertising 4 “Everything’s Okay” (Season 4, Episode 1)

It’s the episode we absolutely needed after that Season 3 finale. Chloe knows, Chloe ran, and the episode opens with one of the best Tom Ellis covers ever, with some really cool camera work too. Falling back into normality was a given, but it leaves us just as confused as Lucifer.

RELATED: Lucifer Season 4: 10 Most Shocking Moments

Not everything is as okay as it seems. We see Chloe helping Father Kinley, a priest hellbent on sending Lucifer back to Hell. That betrayal of trust plays a massive part in the rest of the season, especially for both Lucifer and Chloe’s character development and relationship. Things will never be the same again.

3 “Super Bad Boyfriend” (Season 4, Episode 8)

What Lucifer likes to play with so much is starting off with a fun, light concept and twisting it somewhere in the final act. This episode is one where you absolutely need to see the ending. Lucifer finally breaks up with Eve, which brings him to a bit of soul searching. Everything leading up to this moment forced Lucifer to think about his identity.

And then we finally hear it, what’s been hinted at throughout the entire show, but never said outright until now: “Why do I hate myself so much?”

advertising 2 “Save Lucifer” (Season 4, Episode 9)

Directly following that big self-enlightenment, Lucifer subconsciously punishes himself for what he believes he is. Since Lucifer hasn’t really given in to that admission until now, this marks the first time he openly acknowledges how his self-destructive behavior impacts him negatively. It’s only after a conversation with Chloe that he sets on the path to forgive himself.

Also, we see him go full Devil, wings and all. It’s such a cool reimagining of the Devil and more importantly, how this Lucifer doesn’t want to be the monster from the stories. It’s a visual representation of that vulnerability and inner turmoil anyone could be going through, grounding a story about Heaven, Hell, and divinity in a reality we can all relate to.

1 “Who’s da New King of Hell?” (Season 4, Episode 10)

Obviously, you have to rewatch the Season 4 finale before Season 5 launches. There was just so much going on. Charlie, the half-human half-celestial baby, almost becomes the new King of Hell, thanks to some demons Eve summoned. And oof, Lucifer’s Devil voice.

More than that, we finally get that sweet, sweet Deckerstar. Chloe admits her love for Lucifer, and Lucifer shares that Eve was never the first love. It all makes sense, given how much being around Chloe has changed Lucifer over the series. But of course, we have to suffer some more as Lucifer reclaims his crown and leaves everyone he loves behind to keep the demons at bay. What comes next? Who’s going to break him out of Hell, or at least let him truly resign like in the comics? We just don’t know.
