Dr Davis To Speak At Facebook Youth Summit

Bermudian researcher and educator Dr. Katie Davis, recognized internationally for her work in the field of digital media and young people, recently presented to a gathering of principals and teachers in Santiago, Chile.

Dr. Davis delivered her address on August 24, titled The Tech Effect: Understanding and Supporting Today’s Digital Youth, twice in Santiago – once to an audience of 700 educators and once at a meeting at Entel, the largest telecommunications company in Chile.

Granted tenure at the University of Washington in Seattle, Dr. Davis is in Bermuda at the start of a year’s sabbatical.

She will be leaving the Island with her young son, Oliver, in October to take up a position as a visiting scholar at the Hasso Plattner Institute at the University of Potsdam in Germany, returning to Seattle in June 2019.

Before leaving for Germany, Dr. Davis will present at Facebook’s inaugural Youth Well-being Research Summit on October 3 at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California.

The subject of the summit is youth online safety and understanding the relationship between media technologies, youth development and well-being.

The past year has been a rewarding one for Dr. Davis. In addition to receiving tenure, she led a team at the University of Washington who competed in the annual CoMotion Innovation competition organized by the university. The prestigious competition provides funding support for projects judged to have market opportunity and the probability of making a social or commercial impact.

Dr. Davis’ team received $50,000 for their work in creating NatureCollections, an app that reconnects young people to outdoors and sparks their feelings of connections to nature. The team received the first-ever Population Health Innovation Award, a joint award from CoMotion and the university’s Population Health Initiative.

Dr. Davis, designated a Rising Star by the Association for Psychological Science, is the recipient of over $2 million to fund her research.

This includes $885,000 from the National Science Foundation to fund research into science, technology, engineering and mathematics [STEM] subjects; $385,000 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services for the ConnectedLib project which helps librarians incorporate digital media into their work with youth to promote connections across learning contexts; and $450,000 for NatureCollections [including the latest $50,000 award].

Dr. Davis is co-author, with acclaimed education theorist Howard Gardner, of The App Generation: How Today’s Youth navigate Identity, Intimacy, and Imagination in a Digital World.
